Chiropractic Treatment
Chiropractic, a specific type of joint manipulation, has been around in its current form for over 100 years. World-wide research continues to confirm the effectiveness and long term benefits of chiropractic treatment for many types of joint and muscle pain. This has been reflected in government-sponsored guidelines, endorsed by the medical profession, recommending manipulation (as performed by chiropractors) for back pain.
In addition to manipulation, chiropractors here at the Clinic use massage techniques, electro-therapies such as ultra-sound, orthopaedic supports, dietary supplements and other therapies to help.
Several local employers and private health care insurers pay for treatment at the Clinic. Gowns are provided for patients, and you are welcome to have a friend or family member come in with you.
Chiropractic is governed by law in the UK – chiropractors must register with the General Chiropractic Council. In addition, the Clinic’s chiropractors are members of the British Chiropractic Association: members must have undergone a 4-5 year full-time accredited course. Chiropractors are required to regularly update their knowledge with seminars, conferences and audits.
Chiropractic is used to treat most joint or muscle pain, especially:
- low back pain and sciatica
- neck pain
- tennis elbow and some types of shoulder pain
- headaches and migraines
- osteoarthritic hip and knee pain
- joint aches and pains, and muscle spasm
A range of leaflets covering treatment of these and other conditions is available at the Clinic. There is a lot of additional helpful information here. The chiropractors are always ready to advise whether or not treatment may be of benefit, so do feel free to phone the Clinic (even if you haven’t been before) and ask.
Often a course of treatment will be advised, to ensure improvement is maintained, reduce the risk of relapses and prevent long-term problems. The chiropractor involved should be able to advise what would be recommended for any specific case.
From 2011 to 2024 we were pleased to hold a contract to treat NHS patients for the local NHS commissioners. For most of these years we were the sole external provider of manual therapy to the local community. Thousands of NHS patients were treated here over this 13 year period, with satisfaction rates of over 95%.
